Model United Nations
Model United Nations
Sponsors: Laurie Koshgarian and Megan Wegrzyn
Description: Those who participate in Model United Nations attend various conferences throughout the year where they role-play the activities of the United Nations. Students are assigned a country and a committee and must represent that country's view in their committee sessions. The goal of the sessions is for the various countries in each committee to resolve the issues they are debating.
Conferences Attended: Depending on the dates offered, those who are interested in Model United Nations can attend one or more of the conferences to which we commit. During the 2011-2012 school year, Model UN students will have participated in the Carl Sandburg Model United Nations, St. Ignatius Model United Nations, Chicago International Model United Nations, Northwestern Model United Nations and the Lyons Township/St. Ignatius Model United Nations.
Committment: The committment to Model United Nations depends on the student. At the beginning of each school year, students interested apply to participate in Model UN and based on their application, are either accepted or not. Once accepted, they can select the events they are interested in attending. Their involvement really kicks in closer to the date of the actual conference. They must do background research on their country as well as write a position paper(s) for the topic(s) they will be debating. After that, they must obviously attend the event!
