Together we educate students to be informed, inquisitive, responsible, creative, and reasoning individuals.
Our Philosophy
Knowledge of science and the connections between science and society are basic parts of a general education. Three years of science are required for all students. Many students bound for college opt to take four years of science courses to insure that they are well prepared in the event that they decide to study a field in or related to science. Science courses are offered each of the four years to meet the needs of students of all interests and motivations. From the freshman biology through the advanced placement science courses, students have the opportunity to work with highly qualified teachers in well-equipped laboratories. Safety awareness is stressed in all of our science courses.
In addition to our regular science program, the Science Department is now also offering pre-engineering elective courses in conjunction with the Applied Technology Department. These courses utilize the nationally recognized Project Lead the Way curriculum. Information about these courses can be found on special pages within this curriculum guide or you may contact the Science Department Chair. These elective courses do not count towards the three-year science graduation requirement.

Matthew A, Corey A., Andrew B, Jay E., Mateusz G., Eric G., Dylan H., Kevin H., Kevin M., Jonathon P., Pierre R., and David Z. will travel to Ferris State University in Michigan to compete in the National Competition on March 19. Good luck, team!
Each year, Maine South physics students participate in this exciting contest to build a complex machine to accomplish a simple task. Please see Mr. Jeff Downing, Mr. Jack Marino, or Mr. Jim Depies for more information.
Science Olympiad
Congratulations to our Maine South team that placed 7th in the regional competition this year, just missing the qualifications to go down to the State contest! Students compete against other schools in a variety of events that cover all areas of sciences. Please see Mrs. Stephanie Statema for more details on how you can become a team member. Team practices and events run from October through April.
Space Explorations
This group of students conducts research related to problems and scenarios in astronomy and space science. Please see Mrs. Stephanie Statema for more details.
