| What is Mock Trial?
Mock Trial is a program for students exploring law and the legal system. Students in Mock Trial take a case, with facts, affidavits, and exhibits/evidence, analyze everything, and prepare to represent BOTH the plaintiff (in a civil case)/prosecution (in a criminal case), AND the defendant, using the Federal Rules of Evidence. The team competes against other schools in tournaments hosted at schools and courthouses, with the ultimate target being the state tournament held in Springfield in March. The team practices on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-6:00. The Maine South team has been consistently among the top teams in the state, including appearances in the state final round from 1999-2008, 2016, 2017, an 2022-2025, a state championship in 2023, and a third-place ranking in 2024. Mock Trial is a serious time commitment! Interested students should contact the coach or a current team member, and attend a few practices to see how interested they are. Generally the competition team is made up of Juniors and Seniors with at least one full year of experience, and the underclassmen make up one or more JV teams which compete when possible. We graduates practicing law in Illinois and Indiana, in law school in Iowa, and currently competing in college Mock Trial at Harvard, Drexel, University of Illinois, and Michigan State University. There is a Mock Trial Team resource page which is accessible only to team members. |
