The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students annually participate in activities of NHS and its middle level counterpart, the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). (from the national NHS brochure)
The Maine South chapter of National Honor Society follows the guidelines and constitution of the national chartering organization. Students are invited to join by the faculty at the end of their sophomore or junior years, based on criteria established by the national organization and defined in a local context. Members must:

have and maintain a 3.5 unweighted GPA (for students being considered or inducted AFTER November, 2024)

participate (once inducted) the NHS meetings and service activities

maintain leadership and community service

and continue to demonstrate good character
