Summative Reassessment Process

The purpose of the summative reassessment process is to provide an opportunity for students to continue their learning after the initial assessment did not result in an accurate reflection of the student’s learning and/or abilities in the content area.

Each department and/or course team sets the minimum requirements before a student is granted the opportunity to be summatively reassessed. The department’s and/or course team’s summative reassessment process is a part of the syllabus, posted in Google Classroom, and on the course website.

It is important to know that if a student retakes a summative assessment and earns a lower grade on the summative reassessment, the lower grade will stand. The reason for that grade is that it accurately indicates the level of learning the student has achieved at that point in time.

These guidelines are not for students who have an IEP that specifically addresses assessment accommodations (although they can be if they are consistent with the requirements of the IEP).

These guidelines should not be confused with the late work and absence guidelines relating to summative assessment, which indicate that students who miss class, regardless of the absence type (excused and unexcused), should initiate communication with their teacher. Students should plan to complete missed summatives upon return, unless an alternate plan is made with the teacher.

If you have any questions regarding the summative reassessment process, please reach out to your child’s teacher or the department chair.
